Friday and Saturday were another blur punctuated by mourning and a celebration of life. Some of the team participated in feeding the GEMs, while others worked on re-screening the sun room of Joy House. Saturday morning, we received the sad news that one of the GEMs had passed.

Wednesday was a very special day as we were able to take to GEMs swimming at Lake Victoria Hotel in Entebbe. But, before we went, we posed for a team photograph. My apologies for the lower quality of the photo. This was texted to me and the resolution wasn’t as good as my other photos. The photo depicts our entire team of nine, along with the entire host family, outfitted in our new GEM tee shirts!

Monday and Tuesday were a bit of a blur. On Monday, we were given a tour of The GEM Foundation. Unfortunately, I left my phone/camera in the Administration office so my documentation was not up to par. Within each shift, there are two other 12-hour shifts to provide 24//7/365 care of the GEMs. They overlap on Thursday for meetings and other events, in addition to taking care of the children. When a team visits GEM, it is customary to host a lunch party for the staff on Thursday.

I leave Amsterdam for the Schiphol International Airport tomorrow morning to resume my trip to Uganda. The purpose of these last few days in Amsterdam was to reset my circadian clock to Netherlands time, which is still one hour behind Uganda, but much closer than the ten hours from San Diego. To that end, my trip was successful! I can make it through a day without heavy doses of espresso and/or taking extensive daytime naps. I can almost sleep through the night. The few days also allowed my body to heal from the nasty fixed drug eruption (’nuff said)!
Continue readingI debated with myself whether I should post this. If you are squeamish look away. As it is, I’m going to upload the smallest possible photograph. Rest assured, nothing in the photo is obscene. My goal was to be real with the experience, so here goes…
